To celebrate the birth of my friend's baby, I made a big batch of vegetarian split pea soup. My friends told me that they had plenty of clothes and furnishings, but anticipated needing food that would be easy to freeze and reheat. So I bought about four pounds of split peas in bulk, washed and picked them over, and made them into soup. Before I learned to make split pea soup for myself, I couldn't abide the smell and had to force it down. Maybe it's because the meatless version not the salty, fatty stuff I remember my friend's grandmother making. (Although I'm not a vegetarian, I prefer to make it without the hambone.) Or maybe it's more appetizing because I've seen the onion, parsley, carrots, and peas while they were still colorful and fresh-looking. Also, my version has chipotle sauce and white wine.
Are there any foods you disliked until you started cooking them for yourself? Is there anything you will eat only if you've made your own special version?
